How Fasting Slowed Down My Week

This past week I decided to participate in a social media fast in order to prepare for General Conference this weekend. Boy, I am so glad that I did. I found myself reaching for my phone all the time, avoiding social interaction (ironic cause I would use the phone to get on social media... haha), distracting myself from other tasks I did not want to do, and even as a tool to wind down before I went to bed at night. I cared so much about what was going on on the internet! How ridiculous is that?? I went to the Jonas Brothers concert this week, and even though I was a little sad I couldn't see all the posts my friends were tagging me in about it, it was really nice to just soak in the moment and truly enjoy the atmosphere of the concert (rather than focus on the content of what I would post about from the concert). Well, this week has given me some time to really put things into perspective and let me be the agent choosing to act instead of being acted upon by social media. I think this week has helped me to moderate my time online more and I am excited to continue to focus more on real life relationships than the ones that are fostered in the fleeting world of the internet.

  1. Good job! Social media fasts can be tough but so rewarding. I love experiencing things without my phone present to distract me, but at the same time really want to document the experience with my phone, so it's definitely tricky! I hope you get everything you need from General Conference :)

  2. I need to be better about taking breaks from social media. Hearing about all you got from it makes me want to stop mindlessly scrolling and start using it more intentionally!
