Was the Force with George Lucas?

The past week or so I have been watching the Star Wars movies for the first time. All my siblings loved the movies growing up but it just wasn't something that I ever really got into. So, I know the general storyline but it has been interesting to actually sit down and watch all of the movies from start to finish. What I am learning is that people have VERY strong opinions about the cult-like culture that surrounds the Star Wars universe. I think that because I did not grow up watching the films I can look at them from a different and maybe objective perspective. One thing that I noticed while watching The Phantom Menace was that all of the characters in a position of power or who were supposed to be seen as above other characters, all had American or English accents (Anakin, Obi Wan, Padme, etc.) . But, contrastingly, all the other characters expressed themselves in either an Asian or African sounding accent (Jar Jar, Viceroy, and other aliens). I am not sure if this was done on purpose by the writers, directors, and producers, but I found it really interesting, especially after taking the multicultural family class with Dr. Sandberg last year. I think that there are a lot of things like this in media that we consume everyday, that are demeaning to some races or cultures, but they are done so subtly that most don't even know it. No one that I talked to about that observation from the first movie had realized that before. Again, I am not sure if it was done on purpose, but it definitely can put the message out there that Asian and African accents are seen as less powerful and prominent than those of English or American accents.
