Letter for Change

10 December 2019
To whom it may concern:
I graduated from Chesapeake high school almost six years ago, and I am grateful for the teachers and experiences that I had there that helped me to succeed so far in my college career. In one of my classes this semester we are learning about all different kinds of media (social, books, movies, music, etc.) and how they can affect individuals and families. It has been an extremely interesting and relevant class!
We have learned specifically in this class that media in all forms can affect the development of children and adolescents specifically.  Studies have shown that experiences depicted in media help to create scripts (internalized or expected behaviors for a specific kind of experience) for how people interact with the world.
The young adult time of life is where many important and lasting relationships are made. It is a time known for excessive media consumption, especially by youth. For this reason, I think and propose that it would be beneficial to the youth in your high school to take an introduction to media class. Because the youth of today are exposed to media more than any other generation before them, this class could be greatly beneficial to helping them learn the implications of media use and how it can affect them long term.
If this suggestion sounds appealing to you, I would love to help put you into contact with resources that would help start a program revolving around teens and the media. Thank you for your time and dedication to the students of the Chesapeake area.
Best regards,
Rebecca Welch
